Ok, back indeed, full of impressions:

Londoners seem to be hooked on iPod. Every tenth person (or so) on my way sported the trademark white earphones. It feels like being part of a big global family (hit me, ’tis cheesy).

Male londoners flash scarves in all outrageous colours and patterns. Since last year, they have not learnt to tie them properly. Moreover, in strong, penetrating wind most people are under-dressed. This is my general observation about Britain. From my experience, Nordic and Baltic inhabitants wrap up well. What a contrast!

A good half of our interns’ class from last summer got employment offers. Funnily, I spent most of my time with Nordic and German grads. Somehow they tend to be both older and more mature, especially compared with the Brits. Those are freshly out of college, often without an MA/MSc but with an undergrad degree in some non-financial discipline. Geography at Cambridge and Physics at University College London are but two examples.

Swedish grads from the Stockholm School of Economics brought warm greetings from Peter Högfeldt. Thank goodness I am still in his “white” list.

The UBS Grad Conference 2006 was a success. I close my eyes at how much money those bankers must have spent. Even North American interns were flown from overseas. Special notice: black tie party last night. I finally got a chance to sport my German evening dress, to approving cheering from the audience (almost). The venue: Draper’s Hall in the heart of the City of London, dates back to the 16th century and rebuilt between 1667 and 1671. Very classy. Funnily, the strategically located Queen Victoria painting faces the audience and… the back of the speaker. I am sure she takes it like a man.

I start work/training on July 17th 2006. What to do in June? Shall I do my first ever beach holiday? Unless I quickly find a reliable male partner, Turkey, Egypt, etc are out. There are downsides of being a “single professional woman”, or whatever.
