In the past week:
I have thrown away my old desktop and gave up free Internet at the old place of residence. Hence the Cyrillic keyboard is gone, and for the hate of “translit” I am writing in English. The move went well – I am confident my old flatmates will not miss the old cranker who used to be the only flat cleaner. My only worry is that the three Finnish pigstrels will suffocate in dirt.
I am living nearer the centre of Helsinki, though still on the metro line. The flat belongs to an old friend currently residing in Warsaw, and the entire 28 square meters are mine, mine, mine. At least I know who the dirt and mess belongs to. The illegal TV is also fun to watch, especially after having lived absent of tele-transmission for months. It feels addictive.
I have been to Sweden and visited friends in Stockholm and Kalmar. The Swedes talk Swedish differently than Swedish-speaking Finns, so-called, but after being a “Russian-speaking Latvian” for almost 22 years, it is hardly a big deal. For the first time in history, Sweden was celebrating its National Day June 6th with a bank holiday. Stockholm full of tourists and Amorella boat (Viking Line) from Stockholm to Turku loaded with drunk enthusiasts were both incredibly fun. System Bolaget was closed (applause). All of my Swedish friends have baby daughters, but with all the babysitting experience, it was rather fun, too. The more children I meet, the more I postpone my own motherhood.
I have read “Angela’s Ashes” by Frank McCourt and recommend it to every single soul. Imagine how good the book must be to encourage one to visit Limerick (Dundee of Ireland) and walk over the streets and spots mentioned in the story. My Irish visit in September is getting shape – thanks to Brendan, good old teacher of English from the Stockholm School of Economics in Riga days. Ireland, I need to survive 10 weeks in London before we meet in autumn. Please spare the rain.
I am frantically preparing to move all the everyday life stuff back to Riga, for which I might hire a camel. Riga will be ready to welcome its faithful daughter back on June 14.
… the twins are waking up and I need to make some baby food. Later.
